Category 5, 5e Voice/ Data Network cabling

Category 5e network cable is an improved specification to the very popular Category 5 that replaced Cat 3. Much of this improvement was in the reduction of signal noise and interference.

Cat 5e cable can achieve up to 1 Gb/s depending on the cable total lenght. Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables operate at a frequency of 100 Mhz. Cat 5e cables works very will for VoIP applications and data network and is widely used.

Category 6, 6A Voice/ Data Network cabling

Cat 6: The mainstream adoption of Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) required new industry-standard cables capable of transmitting at a higher frequency of 250 MHz. Category 6 cable uses thicker-gauge wire, increased shielding, and more pair twists per inch to reduce signal noise and interference. The tighter specifications guarantee that 100-meter runs of Category 6 are capable of 1000 Mbit/s transfer speeds. 10-Gigabit Ethernet speeds are achievable when reducing cable lengths to less than 50 meters.
Cat 6a : Is a proposed augmentation of the Cat 6 standard that would further reduce crosstalk in cabling system and allow for the use of higher frequencies in the 500 MHz range and should be able to provide up to 10 Gbits/s. This type of networking cable is often called augmented Category 6.
